Privacy Analytics (IQVIA)

Health Data Anonymization and Orchestration Platform

Privacy Analytics is an IQVIA company that provides a world-leading platform for anonymizing data. Through their product called Eclipse, users can connect to their data sources, design, and compare various anonymization strategies to meet any regulatory and business requirements.

The core focus of Eclipse is to apply de-identification transformations to data. However, it also includes features typical of data orchestration tools, such as data leak detection, metadata validation, and policy management. The UI was designed as a customizable wizard that would change based on users' goals. For each strategy, users could see a comprehensive report that would help them to understand the risk of re-identifying a subject in the dataset and the usefulness of the remaining data, allowing them to still extract meaningful insights.

What made this product challenging to work with is the need to map the UI to a very complex back-end implementation. The UI had to appeal to users who were not necessarily experts in data privacy but also provide enough controls to satisfy the most savvy data analysts and data owners. Moreover, unlike a typical SaaS product, this was a hybrid solution that included both self-serve and managed services.

That is, some functionality was made available through the UI while others, such as audit log generation was only available via professional services support desk. Hence, the design had to consider how the solution would work together with other tools and integrate with existing workflows within the organization.
